Tracking 2 disturbances behind Laura in the tropics

Not one, but two more areas of tropical concern are being watched by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) behind Laura as we head closer to peak season in September.

They’re labeled Disturbance 1 and Disturbance 2. Disturbance 1 currently has a 30 percent chance of development over the next five days. Friday afternoon, the NHC increased Disturbance 2's chances for development to 40 percent.

Disturbance 1 is a tropical wave located about 900 miles east of the Windward Islands. It is producing an area of showers and thunderstorms. Some gradual development of this system is possible during the next several days while it moves westward at about 15 mph toward the eastern Caribbean islands.

The NHC says the other tropical wave, Disturbance 2 in the eastern Atlantic Ocean just west of the Cabo Verde Islands, is not a threat over the next few days. But, meteorologists describe it as sitting stationary and say it could be an increased threat down the road.

The next three weeks will likely remain active in the tropics as we move into the peak part of the hurricane season.
